Solar Bears

This is old news, but in case you've been in a coma, the Solar Bears are back. That's right, Orlando has hockey again. You can read more about that here.

We want to talk about the logo, which we think is pretty solid. The color harmony is a little discordant, but that's not really a problem here. We do think that the typography could be improved. The thickness isn't consistent across letterforms and there's some tension where the "r" and the "B" meet. Our biggest gripe is that they didn't use a local company to do this. They selected Joe Bosack Graphic Design, a Pennsylvania based firm, to do this work. It's a nice logo, but we can't help but think a local company could have done just as well, if not better. No offense, Joe.

"Some tension" between the 'r' and the 'b'? It's so tense it might snap. I like the bear though. Fail for not keeping it local, but VERY excited to have ice hockey in Orlando!! Can't wait to pound the glass.

The ECHL is based out of Princeton, NJ, which, of course is in close proximity to Penn. I have a feeling they were in charge of finding a design firm to build this out. Joe Bosack also has experience in logo design for the NHL, as he designed the Colorado Avalanche's logo. I don't think any local firm has any experience with professional / semi-professional hockey, understandably so.

@Devon, excited indeed!

@Bryan, that makes a lot of sense, but the Magic keep their branding local, why can't the Solar Bears?

Overall, I am happy they kept the colors and shades theme.
I think the original logo has more depth. Shades has an old-school tough guy look in the original. The new shades is more polar-bear like. I guess updating means making it look cooler to a younger crowd.
I was a season ticket holder before and have my deposit in now...
DROP THE PUCK!
I hope we can find a goalie like Bester or Maracle...
